Dreams come true in tech.

This process with me design team has been incredibly unique. Because this is a workshop, the final draft came in late in the process, which was expected. I imagined us creating a simple canvas for which the play can exist upon, but because of the amount of dedication, energy, and passion my collaborators have brought to the table, it is becoming much much more. Black Boy & The War is becoming a very full theater experience. Tech isn’t just about completing the look, it is about telling the story to best of our ability in that moment using all our elements. The actors and I are just discovering new ideas about the characters and their journeys and we will continue to throughout the run. Looking forward to continuing the incredible on-the-spot collaboration tonight!

Coming together

These last few days have been a testimony to how dedicated our team is. We have added rehearsals to give us a bit more time to work on new material that is coming in. There was a few rounds of trial and error, and now we have complete arch that will make you beg for more! Marlena had a very successful first fitting. She has managed to make the actors look very powerful in their individual ways. Tonight we rehearsed at the theater for the first time and John was able to tape out the set so the actors could get a feel for it. Some staging had to get shifted, but it was all for the best. The Harlem School of the Arts Theater is really beautiful and I think it is a great space for this workshop production. After rehearsal tonight, Jonathan, John, Eric and I celebrated with unlimited pancakes while solving some staging problems with the syrup bottles. Looking for the final run before tech tomorrow afternoon...

The Sound of War

Sound Designer Drew Vanderberg really shook things up on Sunday. Antoinette had been interested in having the sounds of the world come from the actors and that really resonated with me. The sounds of the world come from the people because we have created our own war. From screams, whispers, breathing, and melodies, Drew recorded some really unique sounds from the cast to create the soundscape for this production.

Read through

Wednesday was a big night for us. We read through the entire play with the new edits for Antoinette and it was really eye-opening. The foundation for the play is established and now we are going to go into each scene and relationship and crack it open. Black Boy's journey is a complicated one and Temesgen and I are just now starting to build those layers. Brandie is doing such a beautiful job with Miss Graham, making her both joyful, aggressive, and vulnerable. Just when rehearsal ends when the clock hits 10pm, we just unlock a new discovery! We have all been leaving rehearsal on a high...
